The Rug Company, founded in 1997 by Suzanne and Christopher Sharp in London, was born out of a passion for quality, design, craftsmanship and service, credentials which have enabled it to transform an industry and establish itself as the leading name for handmade contemporary rugs.
The uniqueness of The Rug Company lies in its dedication to innovative and original design, while maintaining the exceptional quality achievable only by using the best traditional rug making skills. Each rug is made by hand by highly skilled artisans and the finest natural yarns; each rug is a precious and unique work of art.
The instant success of the London flagship store quickly led to expansion in the US, as The Rug Company opened its first store in New York’s Soho in 2002, followed by Los Angeles in 2005 and Miami in 2008. There are now 15 The Rug Company stores worldwide, with 5 new international stores opening in 2010.
Renowned for its forward thinking and imaginative designs, The Rug Company’s in-house experts have developed the Contemporary Collection, an enviable array of rug designs in myriad colors and textures that are already becoming design classics of the future.
In 2000, The Rug Company established its Designer Collection: a collaboration with 10 leading British Interior designers including Nina Campbell, Nicky Haslam and Cath Kidston. As its reputation grew, some of the world’s most prolific design talent joined its roster, including Paul Smith, Marni, Vivienne Westwood, Matthew Williamson, Diane von Furstenberg and Tom Dixon. Harnessing the unique vision of these world class designers, The Rug Company works closely with each one to create timeless, collectable pieces encompassing each of their own sought after styles.
Service is paramount to the company, and as such every customer can expect a consultation on how to choose the best rug for their home. The welcoming, intimate stores are a source of inspiration, however the expert sales team are happy to bring the rugs to a client’s house to live with them before making a decision. The Rug Company encourages its customers to explore the endless boundaries of rug design with its Bespoke Service. The size, shape, pattern, yarn and color of any design can be easily customized, or The Rug Company studio is happy to design a rug from scratch for any special commissions.
The Rug Company Boutique was launched in 2009, a collection of exquisite and entirely handmade cushions and wallhangings. The collection continues The Rug Company’s philosophy of meticulous craftsmanship, original design and the highest quality; each piece is lovingly made by hand, taking up to 14 weeks to make. Exclusively designed for The Rug Company Boutique by designers including Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood and Alice Temperley, the accessories are distinctive, precious and collectable.
The Rug Company prides itself on knowing that each piece is entirely handmade, from the spinning of the wool to the weaving on the loom. It is unique, and has been crafted by weavers in the Kathmandu area, whose skills have been passed down through many generations. The Rug Company is proud to support the local skills and traditional craftsmanship, and to make a vital contribution to the economy of Nepal. As well as being a member of GoodWeave, it continually strives to improve the rug making process both environmentally and ethically. It endeavours to be the most socially responsible and green retailer in the industry and put in place an independent auditor to see that this is upheld.
The prestigious awards which have been won by The Rug Company are testament to its credentials. These include the Luxury Briefing Award for Excellence, the Wallpaper* Best Domestic Design Award, the Homes & Gardens Best Design Award, the Elle Decoration
British Design Brand of the Year at the British Design Awards, House & Garden Designers’ Best and most recently, Veranda Magazine’s Art of Design Award for Best Furniture and Home Accessory.
